A brief series summary.PERSONALITY:
Mirai Kuriyama comes from a world where monsters exist in the form of youmu — not quite demons, but largely considered evil nonetheless. Though not all youmu are hostile (or appear in monstrous form, since some do look completely humanoid), the ones that are hostile can be quite vicious, especially toward humans; for this reason, a group exists whose sole purpose is subduing these monsters: the Spirit World Warriors.
Mirai is the only remaining member of her clan. Her family members were killed off for being too powerful — because of their ability to manipulate blood, they were viewed as heretical, too youmu-like, and were therefore slapped with the label of "cursed." Mirai was taken in by the Inami family when she was still very young, but then her adopted sister and best friend, Yui, was possessed by the Hollow Shadow — an extremely powerful youmu with no physical form except for that which it takes when possessing its victims — and Mirai had to kill her.
Things have been pretty tough for her ever since.
TW: SUICIDEPOWER:
The first time we meet Mirai, she's standing on the ledge of her new high school, poised to jump.
Here is a girl who has been through a lot and not dealt with it too well. In order to survive in a world she perceives as hostile towards her, she's adopted a number of defense mechanisms: she distances herself from everyone and everything, including her own emotions; she's convinced herself that she'll never be able to live the kind of life that allows her to find friendship because of the blood on her hands; and she makes herself as small and unnoticeable as possible in order to maintain her isolation, since she thinks that's safer.
That, combined with the fact that she's too afraid to do the job she's supposed to do — kill youmu — is what leads her to the roof. Luckily, she's stopped by Akihito Kanbara, and all of that would have been fine if not for, um, her trying to kill him immediately after. When she discovers that he's immortal, she decides that he would be great to practice on, and thus she starts trying to overcome her fear and makes a grab for her second chance at life.
I'm taking Mirai from early in her series for a few reasons, the foremost being that I want to see how she develops separate from the friends she makes in canon. By episode 3, she's started warming up to the idea that she might actually be able to form meaningful relationships again, but she's still pretty heavily weighed down with guilt over Yui's death. It's around this episode that she begins coming into her own as a fighter, though; with a few youmu kills under her belt, she's gaining courage — albeit slowly.
The worst thing about Mirai is her self-centeredness. Because she's gone through so much, she tends to catastrophize and see the world as actively working against her, which leads her to brush off anyone who attempts to connect with her — this selfish and despairing attitude is what keeps proving her undoing. It's not that she likes being alone, because she doesn't at all, but her actions are driven by the fear that she'll have to hurt someone like she had to hurt Yui, which leads to her draw further into herself, which provides more fuel for her fear that bad things will happen if she doesn't. It's a sucky cycle.
Other notable features of Mirai's personality include her awkwardness, clumsiness, and inability to lie. For all that she wants to hide from other people, she doesn't do a very good job at hiding her emotions and is frequently visibly flustered, which leads her to tripping over things/walking into things/etc. And that makes situations awkward. The rest of her awkwardness comes courtesy of the fact that she shies away from social contact, so she really doesn't have that much experience being with or around other people — after the Inami family kicked her out, it's likely that she spent the following years in almost complete isolation.
But the good news is that Mirai eventually proves able to break free from the cycle of self-sabotaging behavior in which she's found herself. When necessary, she will move out of her comfort zone; she'll interact with people, she'll work to put food on her own plate, and she'll fight to stay alive. It just takes her a while to get to a point where she can make those decisions.
CANON POWERS〈 CHARACTER SAMPLES 〉
Blood Manipulation (Hemokinesis): Mirai is a Spirit World Warrior whose "gift" is the power of hemokinesis; she is able to use her blood to form solid objects, usually her weapon of choice — a sword or a series of equally sharp and sturdy blades. She is also able to use her blood to act as a shield, but she's only able to use this power for a short amount of time before anemia sets in. In order to activate this power, she has to remove the bandages on her right hand.
Acidic Blood: Mirai's cursed blood is also highly acidic and poisonous to all life, both plant and animal (but not her own). She keeps this in check by wearing a special ring on her right pinky finger; when that ring is removed, her blood splatters and fucks shit up.
NEW POWERS
Accelerated Healing: What it says on the tin. Mirai won't be able to instantly heal herself/regrow lost or injured tissue, but this ability will enable her to heal much more quickly than an average human, which should help with her anemia problem (and her tendency to fall over things).

[The girl looking at the camera looks like she has no idea what to say, because she doesn't.
This is so unpleasant.
Mirai frowns thoughtfully, expression twisting in such a way that it suggests she's about to say something, but what she does instead is adjust her glasses, huff, and — and blinks at the camera, like she somehow forgot it was there.]
Oh! Yes, hello. My name is Mirai Kuriyama. I'm new here. I was wondering if anyone recognizes any of these names:
Akihito Kanbara
Mitsuki Nase
Ayaka Shindou
Ai Shindou
If you do, please let me know! They're —
[Another pause, this time paired with an uncertain look.]
They're my friends from home. [She very nearly stumbles on the word "friends."] I'd very much like to speak with them, if possible. And if any of you are reading this — [Here she wrinkles her nose, suddenly annoyed — ] especially you, Kanbara-senpai! — please tell me. I'm —
[Scared.
Quietly:] Thank you all for your time.
Mirai has never been anywhere like Florida.FINAL NOTES:
It's weird, she thinks, but she also realizes that this version of Florida probably isn't anything like the Florida people from other worlds might know — if other Floridas even exist at all. There might be other things in place of them, like maybe another Nagatsuki City. A Nagatsuki City where there are, maybe, no Spirit World Warriors. No youmu.
The thought hurts her head so much that she flinches, but then she realizes the pain is actually courtesy of the milkshake she just chugged. "Owww." She touches her forehead gingerly, expression twisted. "Brain freeze..."
As it slowly subsides, her mind somersaults back to that last thought. No youmu. That may be true of the alternate Nagatsuki City, but it's true of this world, too. Is she still a Spirit World Warrior if there's no spirit world? She wanted a normal life — she thought she'd never be allowed one, but that never stopped her from wanting it — so maybe this is her chance.
Almost hesitantly, she looks at the bandages on her right hand.
And she thinks, No. Probably not.
None!
